The Underground Railroad in Washington County
Join Dr. Mainwaring as he shares his research and the history of the Underground Railroad in this area. His book Abandoned Tracks: The Underground Railroad in Washington County, Pennsylvania, traces the origins of the so-called “liberty line” from the late eighteenth century, when slavery still existed in the county, through the rise of abolitionism to the Civil War.
Dr. W. Thomas Mainwaring is an emeritus professor at Washington & Jefferson College, where he taught American history for more than 30 years. He was chair of the Department of History from 2010 to 2019. He has lectured and written widely about a broad variety of local history topics. Mainwaring earned his B.A. in history from Yale College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
